What a Night Guard Does

Protection,
not a cure

A custom night guard creates a barrier between the upper and lower teeth that absorbs and redistributes the forces of grinding and clenching during sleep. It protects enamel, existing restorations, and reduces the strain placed on jaw muscles and joints over the course of a night.

What a guard does not do is eliminate the grinding habit. Bruxism has underlying causes that may include stress, sleep quality, bite imbalance, or other factors. A guard manages the damage while those causes are evaluated and, where possible, addressed.

We recommend custom fabricated guards because fit directly affects both comfort and effectiveness. A guard that does not fit accurately may not be worn consistently, which negates its purpose entirely.

Signs You May Need a Night Guard

Six indicators
worth taking seriously

Many patients with bruxism are unaware of the habit until dental damage appears. These signs, individually or together, suggest that grinding or clenching during sleep may be occurring.

Worn or flattened tooth edges

Grinding erodes the enamel on biting surfaces over time, flattening and shortening teeth. This is often the first visible sign that grinding has been occurring and is frequently discovered at a routine exam.

Cracked or chipped teeth without impact

Teeth that fracture without an obvious injury are often damaged by sustained grinding or clenching forces. A night guard reduces those forces during the hours when damage most often occurs.

Morning jaw soreness or headaches

Waking up with a sore jaw, temple tenderness, or headaches is a common sign of nighttime clenching or grinding. These symptoms reflect muscular strain from prolonged activation during sleep.

Sensitive teeth without visible decay

Grinding can wear through enamel and expose the underlying dentin, causing temperature sensitivity that does not correlate with any cavity or decay. A guard helps prevent further enamel loss.

A partner reports teeth grinding sounds

Bruxism is often noticed by a sleeping partner before the patient themselves is aware. If someone has told you that you grind your teeth at night, evaluation is warranted regardless of whether you notice symptoms.

Existing restorations wearing prematurely

Crowns, veneers, or fillings that chip, crack, or wear down faster than expected may be doing so because of uncontrolled bite forces during sleep. A guard protects both natural teeth and existing dental work.

How We Fit and Deliver Your Appliance

Precision fitted,
quickly delivered

The process from evaluation to delivery is straightforward. Most patients receive their guard within two weeks of the initial appointment.

Evaluation and bite assessment

We examine your teeth for signs of wear, evaluate your bite and jaw joint, and discuss your symptoms. This helps determine whether a guard is appropriate and whether any underlying bite or jaw issues need attention alongside it.

Digital scan or impression

An accurate scan or impression of your teeth is taken to ensure the guard fits precisely. A poorly fitting guard is uncomfortable and less effective, which is one of the main reasons custom fabricated guards outperform over the counter alternatives.

Laboratory fabrication

Your guard is fabricated in a dental laboratory from the scan of your teeth. Material selection depends on your grinding severity, jaw anatomy, and comfort preferences. Fabrication typically takes one to two weeks.

Fitting and delivery

We check the fit, comfort, and bite balance of the guard at your delivery appointment. Adjustments are made so the guard seats accurately and does not shift or cause discomfort during wear.

Care and follow up

We review how to clean and store your guard and recommend how often to bring it in for inspection. The material wears over time and guards may eventually need replacement, particularly in patients with heavy grinding habits.
